Here you can find a collection of links to (free) learning resources related to painting I have found to be genuinely useful and insightful.
Also, this list doesn't cover anywhere near everything. It's just some specific 'gems' that I've kept track of.
If you have any suggestions you think would fit the list, please contact me

With this kind of stuff there is always more to learn, and you never know everything. Also, since my stuff is still pretty crap and I wouldn't call myself anywhere near an expert, this list will keep growing as I do. What I think is the most important now I might think is kind of irelavant in a year from now, when I've learned more. This page would definately have looked a lot differently if it was written in late 2024.
Also, it is influenced by my own taste and interests. As you will see it starts with colour and light instead of drawing as most people do. This is because thats just what exited me the most at the time, so it's where I started.
I've structured this list so it starts with first being able to make any image, and then at the end, what makes a great image. This section will focus on being able to capture the light and colour of a scene and get something pretty on the page, then later on the page it will cover how to decisively design the composition and stuff to make the image well considered and be actually good.
Introduction about what we are trying to do
Some specific things to be on the look out for when you are doing your colour studies, and know of when doing imaginative stuff later on.
These videos are really great at showing you exactly how you should be thinking when approaching a painting. Nothing is done 'just because', and every element is carefully designed.
This is now going into more specific design features you can be considering adding.
These videos from Alfredo Cassano are really great at showing what good drawing looks like, and how you should approach it. I've timestamped some specific moments of interest, but the whole video is worth watching.
